Heading to Cassiar Highway

We leave tomorrow to start south along the Cassiar Highway.
Plan is to stop halfway in Iskut, then 2 nights in Hyder.

Hyder will be our official last Alaska town!
We are staying at Camp Run-A-Muck!
From the campground’s website

Also hope to see bears safely.
Salmon should be running now until September and the bears love it!

Haines Junction to Watson Lake

Haines Junction to Johnson’s Crossing
Johnson’s Crossing to Watson Lake

Looks like others followed our lead for a good lunch spot
heading to Watson Lake!
4 travel trailers and 2 small motor homes in front of us.

Lunch stop view: Priceless
This portion of our trip retraced part of our original route.
It was nice to see it again and from the opposite direction.

The Yukon and BC can’t be beat for scenery
 !

Tok to Haines Junction

Tok to Border Crossing: 90 miles and easy entering The Yukon.

After that we drove past the fire that delayed us entering Alaska.
The fire jumped the highway at several locations.  Sad to see the damage.
The first thing to come back is fireweed!

Seemed to stretch 10 miles if the highway just past Beaver Creek.
A different view of Kluane Lake: cloudy and late afternoon.

A gas station with rv sites!
$30 for full hookups, pull through and wood for a fire!

23 total sites in a gravel/grass parking lot.
Typical along Alaska Highway in small towns.
Pull in, have dinner, shower, sleep, have breakfast, unhook and go!
Part of the journey....

Tok to Stewart & Hyder

1123 miles:
Tok to Stewart &Hyder

As we retrace part of our trip there is less if a chance to post daily.
We will be traveling back along the Alaskan Highway from Tok to Watson Lake.

At Watson Lake we’ll head south along the Cassiar Highway
to Stewart and Hyder.

The extra miles are for our inland route that we planned.
We chose not to take any ferries, along the marine Highway, because our dog would have to be kenneled on board.
That’s a nonstarter for Rose, and good news for Paddy!

Glenallen to Tok

Beautiful scenery but horrible road conditions.
You need to follow a pilot car in and out of major road work.
This is the nightmare of bad Alaska roads

Frost heaves and road work everywhere on this leg.
Impossible to even do a posted speed limit.
Stressful to say the least.

Quiet campground to pull into at the end of our travel day on the Tok Cut Off Route!

If you are coming in to Alaska on the Alaska Highway Tok is the first town.

It is often the last most people see on the way home.

We head to the Canadian Border tomorrow but will travel south to the town of Stewart.
There we will cross back into Alaska to the town of Hyder.

Salmon run from mid July to September and Hyder has a great spot to view bears, from a safe distance,
going for salmon in the river there!
We will also get a chance to see both Bear and Salmon Glacier!!!!!

Stewart is an orderly Canadian town and Hyder is a tiny Alaskan bush town.
Two entirely different towns just at the border.

Still plenty of travel left for us including the Canadian Rockies.
Jasper and Banff are their National Parks and we hope to spend a week there!

Palmer to Glenallen

After Palmer the highway begins to wind its way through a mountain
pass and climb towards the Copper River Valley.

One of many lakes along this portion of the Glen Highway.
This is Long Lake.

Our lunch spot overlooking the glacier.
This is at Mile Marker 101.

Portage Glacier

Lunch at Portage Glacier.
Just 5 miles off our main route from Seward to Palmer.

Seward Camping

We opted for a private campground just outside of town.
Homer and Seward offer no frills city camping in parking lots.
Some even have electric and water.
The first 3 pics are those city lots in Seward.
This camping is crowded and tight but often offers spectacular views.

Stoney Creek RV Park

Creek just across from our site.
